COVID 19: Here Is What We Are Doing To Keep Our Team And Guests Safe

To Our Friends & Family,

It’s part of our core strengths and purpose to provide kindness not only to our guests, but also to ourselves as a team. As a team, we are making sure that wellness is of top priority during the emerging cases of illness. This mindset helps us to create a safe and healthy environment for all.

We are monitoring this evolving situation very closely and working with local officials to ensure we’re doing all we can to keep our guests, team, partners and food safe.

Below are the ways that we will currently address this issue, and we will adjust accordingly as needed.

What we are currently doing in our restaurants:

  • Conduct wellness checks to confirm the health of each employee before entering our kitchens
  • Wash our hands often (at least every hour and between tasks) for at least 20 seconds with antibacterial hand soap
  • Increase Sanitation and Cleaning routines from every hour to every 30 minutes
  • Teammates will sanitize hard surfaces (counters, POS screens and payment card swipers) every 30 minutes with Sanitizer
  • Bartenders, Servers, Hosts may wear gloves and wash hands in between glove changes and cash transactions.

What we encourage guests to do:

  • Wash your hands frequently and use a paper towel to dry
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick
  • Stay home when you are sick
  • Cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze with a tissue, and then dispose of the tissue

We recognize the COVID-19 virus will require all of us as a community to be more mindful as we go through our daily activities. Please know we are constantly monitoring the situation and will continue to adjust as necessary to ensure we keep delivering the great experiences our guests have come to expect at all of our restaurants. As always, thank you for allowing us to be a part of your family and your traditions.

Welcome Chef Iker Castillo

Please join us in welcoming a new member of the Macayo team, Chef Iker Castillo from Tijuana, Mexico!
IMG_8805bSharisse Johnson and Chef Iker first met last summer in Tijuana after being introduced by the owner and principal of the Culinary Art School in Tijuana, where he received a formal culinary education. When they met there was an immediate connection between her vision and goals for our Macayo brand and a dream Chef Iker has had for many years. That dream to bring his passion behind Mexico food to the United States. This was also one of our founder’s (and Sharisse’s father) Woody Johnson’s dreams as well; to introduce a chef from Mexico and partner up with them to bring innovative dishes to our Macayo menus. Chef Iker’s culinary background is steeped in the flavors and traditions of Mexico – born of his extensive travels among Mexico City, Guanajuato, Sinaloa, Baja California, and more, and honed with his formal education at the Tijuana Culinary Institute. His culinary palette is also colored by time spent living in Italy, immersed in its culture of family, tradition and fine food. It was there that he discovered his passion for the art of cooking and realized he was meant to be a chef.

Spring 2017 will see the launch of a new concept, Mercado Negro by Macayo’s in Phoenix, featuring an exclusive new menu designed by Chef Iker. He has been hired as the Chef for that location and throughout the construction process will test his new items in our test-kitchen at our Scottsdale & Shea location.

While we will look to Chef Iker for his expertise in culinary procedures and flavors, our intentions are not to change any of the Macayo foundation. How could we touch Woody’s recipes that we have been using for the last 70 years?! As we are always trying to grow and get better every day, we have asked him to take a look at some of our current practices and procedures and help us make any changes in order to provide better execution in our kitchens.

Stay tuned for more information and updates on our new restaurant, we will keep you updated all throughout the process! And don’t forget to visit Chef Iker at our Scottsdale & Shea location and try one of his new dishes! We hope you will join us as we embark on the next exciting Macayo chapter!

70th Anniversary!

A Letter from Sharisse Johnson, Woody Johnson’s daughter and our CEO
As we approach a large milestone later this month, I am excited to announce an impactful change. As of September 20th, 2016 we are changing our name to Macayo’s Mexican Table. The name change is a result of an extensive rebranding effort our team has enjoyed working on throughout this year. Our new logo retains the distinctive elements that have become associated with our logo through the years, while lending a fresh spin and more contemporary aesthetic to the overall mark. The new design honors our heritage that informs and inspires our evolving contemporary brand.

The name Macayo’s Mexican Table, and our new logo to go along with it, announces that things are evolving at Macayo’s while also reassuring consumers that the Macayo’s they know and love isn’t going away – it’s just getting better. It was important for us to incorporate the word “table” because to a great extent the table is the most important aspect of the meal. It’s where people come together to eat; it’s communal, it’s familial. It’s where we bond over the meal. The table is at the center of the ritual of dining. The focus is on our guests and where they come together to enjoy their experience with us.

Over the past few years, our team has been committed to a strategy to build upon the foundation started seven decades ago and get ready for the next 70 years. This strategy for our future is in the spirit of my Father, Woody Johnson, who without a doubt was one of the most innovative men of his time. When it came to Mexican food, outstanding hospitality and restaurant operations, no one set ground breaking standards like him.

You may have heard already, but yes, we do in fact have an inspiring project going on at our flagship location, Macayo’s on Central. It’s important for us to note that we are not closing, just moving across the street!  In what is called an “adaptive reuse” project, we will be moving into a building next door that currently sits as an auto shop. This project is truly in honor of Woody and his dream and innovation, as the design is inspired by his original concept of our Central Macayo. Our goal is to create a space similar to the look and feel that Woody built in 1946 with a modern appeal. The new Central location will offer a fun, indoor-outdoor environment, including an outside patio, making an amazing contribution to the Central Avenue skyline, while still maintaining the same exciting Macayo’s atmosphere guests have loved over the years. We are very excited to make this move early next year.

As you can see, 2016 has been a big year for us! We could not be more proud to celebrate 70 years as a local institution in Arizona. We want to thank you all for all of your support through the years. Thank you for making Macayo’s part of your family and your traditions.  Here’s the next 70 years!
